PROFILE     Dr. Shankar Rajaram, Senior Associate
  • M.S., Ph.D., Materials Science, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA
  • B.Tech., Polymer Science and Rubber Technology, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Cochin, India
  • B.Sc., Chemistry, American College, Madurai, India

Dr. Rajaram has 9 years of experience in noise and vibration control, including 5 years as a transportation noise and vibration consultant. He has played a key role in the analysis and documentation of environmental noise and vibration for several projects related to LRT, modern streetcar, freight train, and high-speed train systems. He has performed FTA/FRA guideline based, vibration studies for complex projects that have existing train traffic. These projects include the CN-EJE merger in Chicago, Colton Crossing grade separation near Los Angeles, and the California High Speed Rail for the Los Angeles to Anaheim corridor.

In his work at ATS, Dr Rajaram has taken the lead in developing testing procedures for the use of a drop weight impact device to measure vibration propagation and force density for a variety of rail modes. As a subject expert, he has presented several technical papers at national and international conferences on best practices for applying the vibration propagation method. He has also performed sound insulation analysis for residential development projects that are required to meet CEQA, NEPA, and HUD thresholds for indoor noise.

Dr. Rajaram has expertise in acoustics of materials and has developed vibration mitigation for several rail projects. Recently he played a key role in formulating rubber support pads for floating slabs designed to isolate low frequency train vibration at low service temperatures(-40°F) for the CCLRT project in Minneapolis. He also took lead in developing novel materials for other acoustics applications such as sonar domes.
